The surreal world of John Tiney and David Wilkinson will be coming to
London‚s East End Gone Tomorrow Gallery in their new show Csak Munka! (Which
means „only work‰ in Hungarian ˆ a phrase used to encourage people to get
back to work).
Opening on Saturday 14 September, the exhibition will feature an
installation sculpture and video work of a sprawling landscape inhabited by
large mutant sausages. Occupying the whole gallery space, the installation
and video piece will encourage people to interact with the decrepit scene of
a large internal forest strewn with the bodies of dishevelled sausages.
Wilkinson currently lives and works in Hungary and has recently resurrected
the old family trade of butchery to produce some of the finest sausages to
be found in Hungary.
Wilkinson writes,
„Sausages have always been a part of my life. I spent the first 35 years
trying to escape them and the last 3 years living from them. I rejected the
gift of my father only to have it save me‰
While Tiney and Wilkinson‚s creative concerns and choice of artistic mediums
are often very different, their collaborative work brings together each of
their unique takes on popular culture and creates an uneasy environment that
merges the abject with high-pop humour.
Tiney describes his practice as,
„An unconscious fascination with imagery that is often associated with
consumerism.‰
Tiney and Wilkinson‚s shared humorous approach to the creative process has
seen them work on several collaborations from the sublime to the ridiculous.
It was during their collaboration Drive-Thru at the Three Colts Gallery in
2006 that the idea for this exhibition was first formulated.
Now after a years work and travelling from Budapest and London, Csak Munka!
marks a major accumulative piece of work from the pair, and is one of their
most ambitious pieces to date.
